The present castle was built on a Roman fortress. Much of Sohail Castle was constructed under the rule of the Arab king Abderraman III. The Christians gained control over the castle in 1485. From 1810 to 1812, the castle was occupied by Napoleon. Since 1812, Sohail Castle has been the property of the Spaniards. In the second half of the 20th century it seemed that nothing would remain of the castle. The first archaeological works were carried out on the local ruins in 1974. Since 1978, Sohail Castle has become a national cultural monument. From 1995 to 2000 an extensive reconstruction of the castle was performed. The landscaping was completed in 2002. Today is Sohail Castle a popular destination for tourists. Throughout the summer, various concerts and festivals are regularly held. The castle is open daily from 10 to 21 hours..
