Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria. It is located in the western part of Bulgaria, at the foot of the Vitosha mountain range. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe. At present, the city of Sofia has a population of approximately 1.5 million.

History of Sofia

Archaelogical excavations of the fortification and ancient settlement indicate that the place had been settled in the 7th century B.C. At that time the locality was inhabited by the Thracians, who named today´s Sofia the first name - Serdika. After a long period of siege in 809, Sofia was first connected of Bulgaria. It was under the reign of Khan Krum. During the period of 12th to 14th century, Sofia was an important centre of trade and crafts. The now used name, Sofia, was given to this city in the 9th century. It was derived from the Greek word "wisdom". In 1878, Sofia was liberated from Turkish rule by Russians and after a year it became the capital city of the independent Bulgaria. Numerous archaelogical findings show the rich history of the city.

Sights and monuments in Sofia

There is a large ancient underground area under the modern buildings. The most significant monument of the city of Sofia is St. Sofia´s Church, built in the mid 6th century. St. Sofia is the patron of the locality. Ten centuries later the St Sofia Church was rebuilt in a mosque, whose big part was destroyed by the earthquake in the 19th century. It was repaired some time later. There are other valuable monuments, for example , St. Nicholas´Church, built in 1912; Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, whose interior is decorated with onyx and alabaster; the Banya Bashi Mosque, made by Mimar Sinan; and the medieval Church of St. Nedely. Boyan Church, built in the 13th century, is on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage. The oldest building in Sofia is St. George Rotunda, built in the 4th century (it is now totally hidden in the middle of the modern buildings) . The National History Museum in Sofia offers large collections and permanent exhibits with over 650 000 artefacts. The National Archaeological Museum in Sofia has collections with archaelogical findings from the whole Balkan peninsula. The National Gallery Sofia presents artistic work from Europe, Asia (Buddhist art, Japanese and Indian art) and many pieces made by African artists too.

Beautiful parks and calm localities to relax

There are great many parks and green areas in the city of Sofia that will attract you to sit for a while and relax. The best-known parks in Sofia is the City Garden and the Park of Freedom with an artificial ice rink. There is the and sports facilities, too. You can also visit any of tens of cosy cafes or you can just sit at any of tranquil localities with little fountains. Sofia is famous for a variety of mineral and thermal springs.


Today´s Sofia is the main economic centre of Bulgaria and important central point for international railway and automobile routes. Sofia has an international airport that was modernised in 2005. In addition, there is a good network of municipal transport, including the metro.

Sofia is the most important university centre in the town. There are 9 universities.
