Sliema is the busiest tourist centre on the north-eastern coast of Malta . It is located on the Sliema peninsula just a few kilometres from the capital city Valetta.
Transport Sliema
It is very easy to get to the city of Sliema. If you have already been on Malta, you can take a bus to Sliema - there are many bus lines throughout the island. Another option is to rent a car but you should known that the traffic in the city and its surroundings is rather heavy. There are many ships that set off the city of Sliema - not only holiday ships that offer trips around the island but ferries to the capital city Valetta, too.
Tourist information
Sliema is one of the largest holiday resorts and shopping centres on Malta. There are excellent brand shops on Malta, such as Marks and Spencer, Topshop or Dorothy Perkins. Keen shoppers will be impressed with most modern shopping galleries, for example, Plaza Shopping Centre or The Point. You can enjoy shopping at the main promenade: it is 3 km long and it is considered the busiest street on Malta, day and night. The promenade offers hotels, restaurants, bars, little parks and a lot of shops. During the tourist season the promenade is the place where celebrations, festivals and other social events take place. There is a casino in the city, too.
Beaches Sliema
The eastern coast of the city Sliema offers a variety of Mediterranean sceneries with breathtaking sunrise. However, the beaches are not very good for swimming – in particular not for families with children. The eastern coast is stony and access in the water is rather difficult, despite the fact here and there steps and rails have been installed, and there is a couple of places covered with concrete. At least a small locality with a sand –and-stone beach is situated at the northern part of the city in Balluta Bay, where Sliema merges with the city of St. Julian.
For families with children
The beaches in the city of Sliema are generally not the best choice for families with children but there are some places that have been adapted for children, for example, children playgrounds and public parks, in particular along the promenade or in the northern part of the city where the largest one - the Independent Park is situated. You should take your children to the
Duck´s Village –a picturesque little "village" for ducks that is located at the entrance area to the Manoel island.
Sport Sliema
Sliema is not a city of cafés, shops and restaurants - it is attractive for sportspeople as well. The town does not have its own football stadium but its football team is the best team on Malta. Besides football, local people are keen scouts and basketball players. Tourists can try out various water sports, such as diving or windsurfing, or they can take a long walk along the promenade - or they can ride a bike or go jogging there. There are several tennis courts, too.
History Sliema
The city of Sliema is proud of its long history and various historical monuments. There are five churches in the city. Tourist often visit two of them, Nazareth and Sacred Heart. Another tourist attraction is Tigne Fort, an old fortress located on the southernmost tip of the city. It was built as the last component of the Malta defence system in 1792. The Tigne Fort offers spectacular views of the capital city Valetta, situated on the opposite peninsula - and not only at daytime but at night too. As for other sights, there is a watch tower at the eastern part of the city ( Fort Sliema) and
also St. Julian´s Tower (on the northern side. The southern part of the city, at the border line between Sliema and city of Gzira, is distinctive with a bridge to Manoel island that will give you a chance to visit the dominating landmark of the island - Fort Manoel, a defence fort built in the 18th century.
Accommodation Sliema
Sliema is considered the busiest holiday resort on Malta. There are several modern hotels designed primarily for wealthy guests. Anyway, there are a lot of less expensive, smaller hotels, hostels and apartment houses. Sliema has a good reputation in terms of services for tourists and attracts visitors from many countries.
