There are several islands in Skadar lake. The largest one is called Vrancina. Then there is Grmozhur Island which used to be a prison, and then there are smaller islands named Starchevo, Korn, Beska, Gorizia and Omerova Gorica. There is also and archipelago named Krayinske which consists of some 50 smaller islands. The lake shore is mostly covered by wetland and it is rich in flora and fauna. Skadar Lake is the last habitat in Europe with more than 270 species of birds, including the rarest ones - the pelicans. There are many protected species of both freshwater and saltwater fish. The part of Skadar Lake in the territory of the state Montenegro has been declared the national park ( 1983) ..
