The food is amazing; you will always be able to find delicious food around the corner no matter where you are. The shopping is not as interesting, but the entertainment and theme parks are worth the time.

Singapore is a city state in Southeast Asia. It is located on Singapore Island and on 54 nearby islands. Singapore was founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles from the East India Trading Company in 1819. In 1867 it became the British colony. Singapore was an important port. During the Second World War II it was conquered by the Japanese. The British gained Singapore back at the end of the war, and it was included in the Malaysian Federation in 1963. Since 1965 Singapore has been an independent republic.

Singapore Today

Singapore has become a supermodern and wealthy state. It is the second largest port in the world. Singapore is known for its strict law, cleanness and surprising contrasts, for example, people of various religions, such as Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Christianity, etc. coexist in the city in harmony.

Architecture and Monuments

A lot of houses in Singapore clearly indicate the former connection with Britain. The most significant monuments and buildings in Singapore are situated at or near the main square - Padang: St.. Andrew , the City Hall, the Supreme Court, Parliament and the Queen Victoria Memorial. Various minorities live in this city so when you explore it, you will come across the Chinatown and Little India. In the Chinatown there is the oldest temple in Singapore, Sri Mariamman. Just next to it you can admire modern skyscrapers and decorative parks. The most important is the skyscraper Westin Stamford. The building has 70 floors and it is a part of Raffles City shopping complex. On the bank of the Singapore River you can find the statue of the city founder, Sir Raffles.

Sentosa Island is a favorite place of both local citizens and tourists. There are large beaches and an entertainment center. In the Volcanoland, for example, you can enjoy simulated earthquake. In the virtual world of Cinemania you can ride the bobsleigh track or visit the Devil´s mine. The dominating feature of the island is the 37 m high statue of Merliona. This statue is a symbol of Singapore. The statue was installed at the center of Musical Fountain. The most popular attraction of Sentosa is the Underwater World. It consists of a glass tunnel in a large aquarium. It is very impressive when sharks, a number of fish and other sea inhabitants swim above the heads of the visitors.
