The highest point in Sierra Madre del Sur is a volcano named Tacana (4,092 metres above sea) .
The range is characterized by very high biodiversity and large number of endemic species. A large part of the range is covered with pine, oak and beech. The slopes in the lower parts of Sierra Madre del Sur are occupied by tropical rain forest or coniferous wood (depending on the altitude) . In the northern part of Sierra Madre del Sur you will come across deserts and semideserts which reach up to the Gulf of California.
