Sierra de San Pedro Martir National Park is the first national park declared on the Californian Peninsula. It lies in the mountains of the same name, in the State of Baja California, in Mexico
. It covers an area of 650 km2
. The area is covered with typical Mexican desert shrubs, creepers and coniferous forests, mainly pine and fir trees. Sierra de San Pedro Martir National Park is popular mostly thanks to the rocky granite formations and the forests. The highest mountain of Sierra de San Pedro Martir National Park, which is also a frequent destination of climbers, is the Devil's Peak (3,078 m above sea level) . The National Astronomical Observatory was built near this peak in 1971. The observatory has the largest optical telescope weighing 40 tons.
