The Shwedagon Pagoda (also Golden Pagoda) is a 98 m tall, gilded pagoda in Myanmar (Burma) , in the capital city Yangon . It is located to the west of the Kandawgya Lake, on the top of Singuttara Hill. It is a dominating landmark of the city. Shwedagon Pagoda is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage site in Myanmar. According to a legend, the Shwedagon Pagoda is 2500 years old. Archaeologists insist that it was built in the 6th century AD. In 1930 it was destroyed after a large earthquake and had to be rebuilt.
