The Shio-Mgvime Monastery is an ancient monument in Georgia . It is situated in the central part of the country, in the rocks near the town of Mtskheta . The Shio-Mgvime Monastery was founded by St. Shio Mgvimeli in the 6th century. He was a Georgian monk, who returned to the country as a missionary from Syria . The Shio-Mgvime Monastery was built in a deep basin surrounded by rocks from three sides. The oldest building of this monastery is the Temple of St. John the Baptist. It is a small temple with a dome from the 6th century. It was carved into the rock, where St. Shio let himself brick in before his death. In the monastery, we can see a well known as the Monk's Tear. A small chapel stands in the upper part of the monastery.
