The city was then called Chua-tching. In 1074 a small port was built. In 1553 Shanghai was fortified with walls in order to protect the city against pirates. In the 19th century, the port expanded into a major center of trade with the West. In 1854 , a special zone for foreigners emerged, not subjected to Chinese authorities. Shanghai became a symbol of modern China. In 1927 the foreigners´zone was put together with the surrounding villages and the Great Shanghai was established. In 1990, modern skyscrapers and a modern international airport were added. Anyway , you can come across medieval monuments in Shanghai,too. The dominating feature of the city is the Bund. Bund is an embankment with tall bank buildings, trading companies´buildings and hotels. This part of the city was built in the beginning of the 20th century and it is protected as a historical monument. On the opposite bank, there is the Orient Pearl Tower. It is 468m high and was built in 1995. Not far from it you can admire the Jintao Mao. This skyscraper has 88 floors - and it is the tallest building in China. On the People´s Square you can visit the Shanghai Museum, whose ground plan is a combination of circles and squares. The museum has rich artistic and historical collections. In the outskirts of Nanjing, there is a Buddhist temple Ting-an. The temple was restored in 1983.Formula 1
