Cold winds are captivated in Serra de Monchique and thus it offers unique climate conditions in the Algarve Region. There are tropical, subtropical and even north-European plants in the park, such as African banana bushes, camellias, cork-trees, eucalyptus, citrus trees or rose bushes. As for animals, lynxes, badgers, eagles or owls live here. Serra de Monchique occupies the area of about 75 000 hectares and is a significant site of the natural occurrence of many plant and animal species.
The area offers many trails for hiking, cycling and horse-riding. The trails are described in many languages in the maps that you can obtain at gas stations. There are charming mountain creeks and waterfalls (e.g. north of the city Monchique ) . The trails offer many beautiful views. One of the most beautiful views is the one from the highest peak of the range Serra de Monchique, Fóia Mountain, from where you can enjoy a round view into all directions.
