Satu Mare is a historical city in Romania . It is situated in the north-western part of the country. Currently it has a population of 114,000 people. Its name means The Big Village.


This area was colonised in the antiquity. The first written record about the city comes from 1181. In the 13th century it gained king’s city rights and it was colonised by the Germans. In 1703 it was burnt down completely. Satu Mare was under Hungarian rule for ages. Since 1918, it is again a part of Romania . In 1970, it was damaged in major floods and people remind this annually on May 14.

Tourist Curiosities and Museums

The Old Town is the most beautiful part of Satu Mare. Its main part is the Traian Boulevard (Bulevardul Traian) which leads to the central Liberty Square (Piata Libertatii) . In its proximity, there are several churches, museums and hotels. In 1 Decembrie 1918 Street you will find a nice orthodox Church of Archangels Gabriel and Michael. Among other sights, there is a catholic cathedral built around 1800, Peace Square (Piata Pacii) and the Firemen Tower. Hungarian Reformed Church built in the 18th century is one of the oldest churches in the city. The building of the Administrative Palace is 97 m high which makes it the third highest building of the country. Former Jewish community is reminded by several sights like The Big Synagogue or Saar Ha Torah Synagogue, along with an orthodox Jewish cemetery and monument. Among the most popular museums in the city is the Art Museum (Sectia de Arta) and a regional museum (Muzeul Judetean Satu Mare) .
