Sarospatak is a picturesque Hungarian city with a nice historical centre. It is situated in the heart of the Tokaj Region, in the valley of the river Bodrog, app. 35 km from the city Tokaj , on the protected plateau at the foothills of the Tokaj Mountains. The population counts app. 8 thousand.

Historical monuments

Sarospatak is a very attractive tourist destination. The most visited sites are the historical monuments and the renowned thermal spa . The city is situated in the famous wine region Tokaj Hegyalja. The dominating landmark of the city Sarospatak is the Rákóczi Castle . Sarospatak belongs among the most beautiful Hungarian cities. In 2002, 125 acres of local vineyards were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

History

The area of the city Sarospatak has been inhabited since ancient times. In 1201, it was granted the town privileges and became an important stop on the trade route from Poland. It was king Sigismund who proclaimed Sarospatak a free royal town. In 1460, it received the right to host fairs. Sarospatak is also the place from where the Reformation started spreading throughout Hungary. One of the most significant Hungarian universities was founded in the city and the teacher of the nations- Jan Amos Comenius - worked there as a teacher for several years. Sarospatak gradually developed the reputation of an important cultural centre of the region.

Rákóczi Castle

The most famous historical monument in the city Sarospatak is the Rákóczi Castle which was built during the reign of Andrew II of Hungary. It later fell into the hands of the Rákóczi family. Sarospatak experienced an extraordinary bloom from 1630, when György Rákóczi was elected the Prince of Transylvania.

Places of interest in Sarospatak

Today’s Sarospatak is sometimes called “Athens on bank of the Bogrod River” . for its rich cultural heritage, of course. Many gothic and renaissance buildings have been preserved in the historical centre. The castle church with a wooden altar is the most valuable gothic monument in Hungary. The Calvin College, founded in the 16th century, was considered an important education centre, where many significant people had studied. In the centre of the city Sarospatak, you will find many modern buildings, shops, restaurants and multifunctional facilities. The local thermal spa Sarospatak Végardó is surrounded with a well-maintained park and there is a swimming pool and a children’s paddling pool opened to public. Regular boats sail out of the harbour on the Bodrog River to the city Tokaj - people usually go there to visit the renowned Tokaj Museum .

City of wine, spa and culture

Sarospatak is, in the first place, a city of wine, spa and culture. In ancient cellars, you can taste wine produced in historic vineyards. There are tourist trails leading along the bank of the Bodrog River across the protected area of the Tokaj plateau. The surroundings of the city Sarospatak literally makes you go horse-riding into the Tokaj Mountains- it is a very popular activity in the region.
