San Jose is the capital and the largest city of Costa Rica. Located in the fertile valley of Meseta Central and surrounded by high mountains, the city with its elevation of 1170 metres enjoys favourable clima all year round. San Jose, founded by Spanish colonists in 1737, receives many visitors. The city is characterized by its harmony between historical buildings of the colonial period and the neighbouring modern edifices. San Jose boasts a number of museums, theatres, churches and cathedrals. The most famous of them is the Museum of Gold, located near the Plaza de la Cultura. The museum exhibits show gold mining and jewellery production. A small coin collection also complements the museum´s displays. Another interesting building is the National Theatre - Teatro nacional - from the end of the 19th century. San Jose has three large parks and a nice zoo. There are two active volcanoes nearby, accessible by a steep path, but their summits are constantly shrouded by greyish fumes, so there is not much to see from the top.
