San Francisco is the fourth most populous city in California, USA . The city is located on the western side of the United States, on the Pacific coast. It is spread along the San Francisco Bay, and includes several islands.

About San Francisco

San Francisco is situated on more than 50 hills. Some suburbs are called according to the hills´ names -Russian Hill, Potrero Hill or Telegraph Hill. San Francisco is a popular destination for tourists due to a great variety of attractions and numerous monuments. It is known as one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

Glances into History

The area of San Francisco Bay was settled 10 000 years ago already. The first Europeanswho came to this territory in 1770 were the Spanish. The first Spanish Mission San Francisco de Asis was established in 1776, and a military fortress was built on a place which was called Presisio. On the island Alcatraz , a settlement Yerba Buena was founded. After the conquest of California by the United States in 1847 the settlement was renamed into San Francisco. Gold was discovered in the near vicinity in 1849 , and San Francisco began rapidly grow into a big city. Unfortunately, much of the city was destroyed by the earthquake of 1906.

Modern Development

The city was renovated in a short time. The Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge were built in 1936 and 1937. The city became more accessible, and began to grow very quickly. In the 1960 it was a center of the hippie movement. San Francisco was hit by another bad earthquake in 1989.

Golden Gate Bridge

The Bridge is suspended on 130 km of steel ropes and is painted with orange. The best view of the bridge is offered from the upper part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. At the southern edge of the bridge stands you can see the Fort Point , built in 1861.

Other Tourist Attractions

Other important and interesting places in the city are e.g. the skyscraper named Transamerica Pyramid Building reaching 257m, or the Chinatown with its own schools, banks and theaters. Tourists usually want to visit the waterfront Fisheman's Wharf with numerous shops and restaurants. You can see there a fleet of historical ships, such as a commercial sailing ship Balclutha, or a steam schooner Wapama anchoring by the pier.

Cable Car

Near the pier you will come across the terminal station of the famous Cable Car. From there it goes straight up the steep hill of the Hyde Street. There is a museum dedicated to the Cable Car and the Powerhouse on the Mason Street. At the top of Hyde Street Hill you will be taken aback by a beautiful view of the bay and the island Alcatraz . Alcatraz used to be prison in between 1934 and 1963.

Union Square

Another significant tourist destination is the centre of San Francisco , the area around Union Square, which is full of luxurious shops and hotels. The dominating feature of the square is the Dewey Monument from 1903. It was built in memory of the Spanish-American War
