It was established in 1915, when animals from the Panama - Californian exhibition, which took place in the same year, were brought to this facility. A part of the San Diego Zoo is the San Diego Wild Animal Park, which is a safari park occupying an area of 7km2. The zoo owns includes over 4,000 animals of nearly 800 species. The zoological garden breeds a large amount of endangered species, which are then under appropriate conditions released back to their natural habitats. The San Diego Zoo is also the largest veterinary clinic in California. It employs a number of top geneticists and veterinarians. In addition to exotic animals, the San Diego Zoo has its own botanical garden, where rare trees are grown as the food for animals. For the giant pandas, it is necessary to grow up to 40 kinds of bamboo, while koalas need 18 kinds of eucalyptus... The San Diego Zoo is one of few gardens where almost all animals are placed outdoor, to localities with nearly identical natural conditions. The Reptile House with terrarium animals is an exception, of course. The San Diego Zoo also has permanent exhibitions. The Monkey Trail introduces species of monkeys and animals of the rainforests in Asia and Africa, such as dwarf hippos, leopards, crocodiles, turtles, snakes and scorpions. The Research Station breeds giant pandas and has the largest number of pandas, including the first offspring bred in captivity in the USA. The exhibition called the Polar Bear represents the Antarctica. In addition to polar bears, there are located 30 other species of animals, such as reindeer and caribou. The rainforest Ituri represents the home of various species from the forests of Africa. The main attraction is the rare okapi giraffe and African forest buffalo. The newest exhibition opened in San Diego Zoo in 2009 is the Elephant´s Odyssey, with a 2.5 acres enclosure for a herd of Indian elephants, and a number of other African animals - such as lions, jaguars, etc. In the San Diego Zoo you will see the largest pack of rare New Guinean singing dog..
