About the city
The history of San Diego is quite long. Remains of a prehistoric settlement have been found in the vicinity of the city and the Europeans discovered the area already in 1542. In 1869, gold was found there and a railway was introduced in the city. The historical character is most evident in the Gaslamp Quarter, which is a popular center of entertainment, shopping and good food today. The real boom of the city came during the Second World War. After the port Pearl Harbor was destroyed, the headquarters of US Pacific Fleet chose San Diego as its seat, especially due to the large local port. You can learn more about the naval history of the city in the Maritime Museum of San Diego, founded in 1948. One of the biggest attractions of the museum is the still functional trade sailboat Star of India from 1863, which is anchored in front of the museum. Present-day San Diego is dominated by majestic skyscrapers. The highest of them, 152-meters high with 34 stories, is called One America Plaza. Photographers like to visit the more than 3-kilometers long Coronado Bridge. It is characterized by its unusual round shape, which was designed so that large military ships could sail below it to the near military base. Where to go
