Salt Mine in Wieliczka used to be in operation continuously since the 13th century until the late 20th century. The salt mining was terminated due to high costs. Salt Mine in Wieliczka is 327 m deep. The length of the tunnels reaches 300 km. Only about 2% of the total area of the underground tunnels and passages are accessible to the public. The corridors were dug at nine levels, connected through large chambers, special tunnels or shafts and elevators. For the uniqueness, the salt mine became the UNESCO World Heritage Site (1978) .
Salt Mine in Wieliczka offers tourists a sightseeing tour which is 3.5 km long. Every year, approximately 800, 000 visitors arrive. During the tour you can admire salt galleries, altars and sculptures made of salt. Another attraction is the underground lake. A part of the tour is an exhibition about the history of salt mining in the area. In addition, regular geological tours are organized for professionals in the branch of mineralogy and mining.
Salt Mine in Wieliczka is open around the year. From April 1 until October 31, from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. For the rest of the year it is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission: 49 PLN. Reduced admission: 35 PLN. Family admission: s 133 PLN (2 adults and 2 children aged 4 -16) . Guided tours in foreign languages are available on request.
