Saint-Tropez is a unique historic city and world-famous holiday resort on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, in the French Riviera region.

World-famous resort

The town is world-famous mainly for celebrities, wealthy visitors and Brigitte Bardot, the French actor and her movie Et Dieu Créa la Femme. Saint-Tropez was the settings for cult "gendarme" comedies starring Louis de Funes: Le gendarme de Saint Tropez, Le gendarme á New York, Le gendarme se marie, Le gendarme en balade, Le gendarme et les extraterrestres and Le gendarme et les gendarmettes.

Glimpses of history

Saint-Tropez is proud of its nice and world-known harbor. Until 1914 it was the main trade port in France. According to a legend, the name of the city, Saint-Tropez, is connected with a martyr, who was executed in the town of Pisa by Nero, the Roman emperor. The martyr´s name was Saint Torpes. Roman soldiers put his body in a boat which then landed at the site where now Saint-Tropez is located. The city is well-known for the first diplomatic contact between France and Japan (Japanese samurai Hasekura Tsunenaga visited Saint-Tropez in September 1615 on his way to Rome. During the Second World War, Saint-Tropez was one of the places in southern France where the Allies landed. It was on 15th August 1944, west of Cannes , in the zone whose width was 80 km. At that time the harbor was totally destroyed.

The town hall (Hôtel de Ville) is located to the north-west of the church, near the Saint-Tropez harbor.
