São Paulo is the largest city in Brazil and the second largest city in South America. Today, more than 22 million of inhabitants make São Paulo their home. The city lies on the Tropic of Capricorn. It is an industrial and commercial center of South America. It was established as a base for the slave trade in the 16th century. In the 19th century it experienced a flourishing economic prosperity, brought about chiefly through coffee growing.
São Paulo is the city of immigrants. You can find Liberdade district (home to the largest Japanese community outside Japan in the world), Italian districts Vista and Bixiga, old Jewish district Bom Retiro and Arabian part of the city is located around Rua 25 de Marco (a popular commerce region near the center of São Paulo).
São Paulo is composed of a historical center, wider center, suburb of the center and suburb of the city. Paulista Avenue lies in wider center. It is a street full of skyscrapers sometimes identified as the "business center" of the city. Due to this avenue São Paulo is sometimes called as a "tropical New York" as there are many restaurants, cafés and nightclubs.
The Praça da Sé is a square where the São Paulo Cathedral stands. Nearby the cathedral is the Municipal Theatre of São Paulo which is designed in the style of the Neo-Baroque.
You can also find a large number of museums in Sao Paulo such as Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo, Museo de Arte Moderna and Museu de Arte Sacra. Museums exhibit interesting cultural relics and works of art.
One of the major tourist and educational attractions in the city of São Paulo is the Butantan Institute which has a well visited serpentarium with more than 100 types of snakes.
Ibarapuera Park is another place which is worth seeing. The park complex contains several museums, the Planetarium and the Japanese Pavilion. The obelisk Monumento às Bandeiras
is a dominant feature of the park.
The city is also famous for the Brazilian Grand Prix (a Formula One championship race). São Paulo is a home town of well-known F1 drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Emerson Fittipaldi, Felipe Massa and Rubens Barrichello.
March for Jesus and São Paulo Gay Parade are among the most popular cultural events held in the city.
