The Royal Botanic Gardens - Peradeniya is located in the city of Peradeniya , close to the city Kandy , in Sri Lanka . It was founded in 1371, on the command of king Wickramabahu III. The Royal Botanic Gardens - Peradeniya is known for growing over 300 species of orchids, medicinal plants and rare trees. It covers an area of 147 ha, at an altitude of 460 m. A Buddhist temple built by King Wimala Dharma is also a part of the area. In 1821, the Royal Botanic Gardens - Peradeniya was formally restored and renewed by the garden architect Alexander Moon.
