Rotterdam

It gained town privileges in 1340. In the 17th century, Rotterdam was the largest trade centre right after Amsterdam . The city's boom came in the 19th century with the development of the German Ruhr region. The city Rotterdam was heavily damaged during the Second World War and therefore only very few buildings of the historic centre have survived. After the war, the modern city Rotterdam sprang up, including the port Waalhaven. In 1958, the construction of the port Europort began. .

Monuments and places of interest

The city was divided into Landstad (city on land) and the coastal part Waterstadt. With the post-war development, a new division arrived and Waterstad is now surrounded by a subtropical swimming area, the Euromast Tower and a housing estate. Worth seeing are especially the Oude haven and the old port that includes well-preserved parts of the original port. The bank is fringed with modern buildings such as the Witte Huis. In the city centre, there are new, sometimes even shocking architectonic pieces.

Euromast

The city Rotterdam is dominated by the highest building in the Netherlands- the Euromast. It is a tower resembling a ship's mast. It is 185 m high and offers a view-terrace and 2 restaurants.

Schielandshuis and other museums

One of the few buildings that have not been destroyed by the bombing is the Schielandshuis. It is the former residence of the association building dams. Today, there are collections of the historical museum. Rotterdam offers many more museums, such as the Maritiem Buitenmuseum - an open-air maritime museum with preserved historic davits. Not far from there is the Maritiem Museum Prins Hendrik, dedicated to the history of the port and seamanship.

Activities and attractions in Rotterdam

In Rotterdam, there is a zoological garden, a subtropical swimming complex or the Korrenmolen De Distilleerketel - a wind mill built in 1727. The city offers several parks for resting, entertainment and sports, such as the Kralingse Bos spreading over the area of 208 hectares and a large pond or the park Plaswijckpark with attractions for children.
