Settlement
The first European settlers arrived to this region in 1831. The settlement was developing successfully until 1886. it was the year when the Tarawera volcano erupted. The settlements in its surroundings were buried with lava and volcanic dust. It took a long time to recover it and bring it back to life. Tourist Attractions
At the beginning of the 20th century, a geothermal spar resort was established, which greatly contributed to the development of the city and its neighborhood. There is a City Museum in Rotorua, with wonderful expositions focused on the history of the spa resort, underground peat bath procedures and on the eruption of the Tarawera volcano. Not far from the city you can visit a Maori village called Whakarewarewa , and you can get to know more about the Maori nation, the original inhabitants. The village had been built on active thermal ground and right next it you can admire the well-known Prince of Wales Feathers Geyser. Parks
There are several geothermal parks in the surroundings. The most active one, the Kuirau Park, west of the city, comprises many geysers, lakes with hot bubbling springs, thermal springs and lakes. In the Wai-O-Tapu Park you can admire a beautiful lake called Champagne Pool as well as the Lady Knox Geyser which can be activated by throwing grated soap in it. The Champagne Pool is 100 m deep and 100 m wide, its water is dark green with an orange line at along the banks. There are many other colorful lakes, e.g. in grey, white, yellow, green-and-yellow or orange. Not far from the city, there are some other lakes. If yoy follow the path along Tarawera Lake, you can climb up to the Tarawera volcano. There is a breathtaking view from its top. In addition, you can identify lava layers on the crater walls. Near the volcano, you can identify one of the villages buried under the volcano lava and dust and you can visit the museum which was established on this site.Tourist information and destination rating
