Rochefort is a city in Belgium . It is situated in the eastern part of the country, on the banks of the Lesse River in the Ardennes , in the Wallonia Region. The city Rochefort has about 12,200 inhabitants today.

Historical development of the city

Rochefort used to be an important stop on the way from Liège to Bouillon. Therefore, a fortified castle was built there in the 12th century. It was besieged many times and damaged by the army of Marshal de Chatillon in 1636.

Caves

There are several historical monuments in the city. The most interesting of them are the monastery church of the Cistercians and the ruins of the fortified castle. The biggest tourist attraction in the city is the local cave complex. There are 6 caves, the biggest and highest of them is the cave Sabat. The most famous are the Han-sur-Lesse Caves, where a river disappears in the interior of the hill Boeme, also called Boine. Not far from the city, there are the typical marble quarries of St Remy.

Beer production

One of the few beers that can be called rightfully called "Trappistes" beer is produced in Rochefort.
