Tourist Attractions

There are many historic buildings in the centre of the city, for example, the cathedral and the theater (1850) , and there are many restaurants, shops and bars as well. The city is distinctive with a number of churches, of which perhaps the most interesting is Chapel of Francis of Assisi (1612) . Tourists usually admire the architecture of the Kahal Zur Israel Synagogue. Other tourist attractions in Recife include the museum (Museum do Estado de Pernambuco) in the fortress called Cinco Pontes, and also the theater (Teatro Santa Isabel) , and the multi-purpose building called Malakoff Tower (it is the memorial, the cultural center and the observatory) . Another interesting locality is the Dois Irmãos Park which includes a botanical garden and the Natural History Museum.

Tourist Services and Entertainment

There are numerous good restaurants, e.g. the Ponte Nova or the Mingus. Among the best dance clubs in town are the NOX club or the OverPoint. For souvenirs and traditional handicrafts from Recife, you can visit the former prison building (Casa da Cultura, from 1848) .

Useful Information

Carnivals and festivals begin in Recife in December. The celebrations culminate by the official carnival, which takes place a week before the Ash Wednesday.

Recife is accessible by car, bus, plane and boat. The nearest airport is located in the southern part of town - International Airport Recife (Recife/Guararapes-Gilberto Freyre International Airport) .
