During the period of late Roman Empire, the town was known as the second most important harbour and it became an important station of the Roman Imperial Fleet. From the 6th century the importance of the town was on the decline, though. In 1796, Ravenna was included in the Papal States. Since 1861 it has been a part of Italy. .

The dominating landmarks in Ravenna are eight Christian monuments that are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: the Neonian Baptistery originating from the year 430; the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia ( year 430) ; the Arian Baptistry (year 500) ; the Archiepiscopal Chapel (year 500) ; the Basilica of Sant´s Apollinare Nuovo (year 500) ; the Mausoleum of Theodoric (year 520) ; the Basilica of San Vitale (year 548) ; and the Basilica of Sant´ Apollinare in Classe (year 549) . There are other valuable monuments in Ravenna, for example, the ancient church of the Spirito Santo (from the 5th century) ; the church of St. John the Evangelist (from the 5th century) ; St. Francis Basilica (turn of the 10th/ 11th century) ; the Baroque church of Santa Maria Maggiore (built in 1671) ; and the church of San Giovanni Battista (1683) with a medieval belfry.Beaches
Ravenna is very popular with tourists because there are several kilometres of beautiful beaches.
