Rabat is the capital of Morocco . It is located in the north-western part of the country, on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. It lies on the estuary of the river Bou Regreg. The city was founded in the 3rd century BC. Today is Rabat one of the Royal Cities of Morocco . It is an important port, as well as a popular tourist destination. The seat of the king, of the government and of the Catholic diocese are all in Rabat. It is also a home to a university, a technical college, a school of carpet weaving and the Academy of the Arabic Language. During your stay in Rabat, you can also visit the local zoo, botanical garden, theatre and museum. The other sites worth mentioning are: the 44 m high Hassan Tower, an ancient burial-ground called Chellah, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V and the Royal Palace. The international airport is 10 km from the city. More than 1.7 million people are currently living in Rabat.
