Quito is the capital of Ecuador . The city, the UNESCO World Heritage Site, is situated 22 km from the equator and is the second highest situated capital in the world (2850 m above sea) . The city is located on the slopes of an active stratovolcano Pichincha (4794 m) .

History

The first settlers of the area of today´s city were people from the tribe of Quitos. This tribe was connected with the Indian dynasty Shyris. Quito had been the capital of the Inca empire until 1526. After the Spanish invasion the city was destroyed. The Spanish conquerors had a new city built on the place of the original city.

Colonial Architecture

A number of colonial buildings have survived until the present days. In the center of the old town you can admire nice white houses, and a number of Catholic churches and cathedrals. On the Independence Square, there are perhaps the most important buildings in Quito, the Presidential Palace and the Archbishop's Palace. Near the square you will see the monastery of St. Augustine. Among other interesting sights is the Teatro Surco from 1878 and the church of La Compañía de Jesús from 1605. On the St. Francis square you will come across St. Francis church, a monastery and the largest Quito museum. The colonial part of the city center of Quito was declared the UNESCO Heritage Site in 1978.

New City

The northern part of Quito forms a new town with numerous shopping centers, hotels and restaurants. The city has a number of parks. Nearby the city, at the area where the equator passes through, the Mitad del Mundo monument was built. On the top of the monument you will se a globe.
