Basic Facts

Pyramid of Cheops is the central part of a large pyramid complex built in the era of the Old Kingdom of Egypt as a tomb for the fourth dynasty Pharaoh Khufu (or Cheops) . It is said that it happened sometime around the year of 2580 BC. Pyramid of Cheops is currently considered as the most typical symbol of the ancient Egypt civilization. That is why it is one of the most visited tourist places in the whole Egypt . Pyramid of Cheops’s base is 230.38 meters wide and 230,83 meters long. This corresponds to an area of twenty football fields. Its current height is 137,5 m. Originally, the pyramid was 2 meters wider on each side and 9 meters higher. Pyramid of Cheops spreads over an area of 5.15 hectares and is constructed from 2.3 millions of limestone blocks. It is quite interesting that until the 80’s of the 19th century, the Pyramid of Cheops was the highest man-made building in the world. It is still unclear how the pyramid was built and many theories exist about it. The newest hypothesis assume that the pyramid was not built by the slaves but by tens of thousands skillful workers.
