Puncak Jaya
Puncak Jaya is a mountain in Indonesia . It can be found in the Sudirman Mountains, in the central part of the Indonesian province Papua, on the island of New Guinea. Due ot its altitude of 4 884 m, it is the highest mountain not only on the island, but also in Indonesia and Oceania. Some sources even claim that its height is 5 030 m.. more »

Interesting Facts
The first man to climb Puncak Jaya was the legendary Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer (on 13th February 1962) . The peak is often called Mount Carstensz or the Carstensz Pyramid. From the year 1995 until 2005, the mountain was closed to the public and the climbers, too. Nowadays, the peak is accessible again, but you need a government permit for the ascent.Tourist information and destination rating
