Portimao is a fishing town in southern Portugal , which boasts especially rich history within the Algarve Region. Portimao is situated about 13 kilometers from the city Lagos .

A little bit of history of the fishing town

Portimao is a city with a long history- it was established in the Roman Era. Later, it was under the rule of the Muslims and was conquered back by the Christians in the 13th century. In the 15th century, fortifications protecting the city from barbarian raids were built. In the time of overseas discoveries, the city's importance grew as ships with exotic cargos from India anchored in the local port. In 1755, an earthquake caused heavy damages and Portimao finally recovered in the 19th century thanks to fish-processing industry. Today, the city is one of the most important centers of sardines hunt in Portugal . That is why the fish-processing industry and fish cans production have survived there. There is even a museum dedicated to fishing in one of these factories.

When visiting Portimao, you should not miss the town hall from the 18th-19th century, or the remains of a gothic church from the 14th century. Along the coast, there is a beautiful promenade with palms, cobbled by basalt pavement stones. You can taste freshly caught sardines there. Passing the 337-meters high bridge, you will get to the other bank of the Arade River, which flows through Portimao. There, you may visit the fort Ferragudo from the 16th century that used to protect the bay. There is a beautiful sandy beach (Praia da Rochacity) south of the city Portimao.
