English navy collaborated with the local pirates when fighting the Spanish fleet during wars over colonies. The Caribbean and Port Royal was so popular with pirates that they travelled there from as far as Madagascar . The most famous pirates from this era are e.g. Henry Morgan, Blackbeard or Calico Jack. Port Royal has a strategic location, so six forts were gradually built in order to protect the city. In the morning of 7 June 1692, Port Royal was heavily damaged by a strong earthquake. The quakes and the subsequent waves buried two thirds of Port Royal and several thousand people. Those who survived moved to the flat southern coast of Jamaica and founded the city of Kingston ..
