Piteå is the most renowned holiday resort in north Sweden . It is located in Gulf of Bothnia, app. 900 km north of Stockholm and 100 km south of the polar circle. Today, it has more than 40 000 inhabitants. Piteå attracts visitors especially by its beautiful nature, pleasant bathing, culture and historical monuments.

Transport in Piteå

Piteå is best accessible by car, bus or plane. By car, you will get there on the E4 European motorway . The nearest international airport is in the city Luleå (Luleå Airport) , about 55 km from Piteå. You can use a bus, shuttle or a taxi to get from the airport to the resort. Piteå is also accessible on the bus Norrlandskusten ( the line from southern Sweden to Luleå ) . The bus terminal in Piteå is situated at the western end of the two parallel main streets Storgatan and Prästgårdsgatan, near the information centre. The railway station is near the bus terminal.

Activities in Piteå

Piteå attracts visitors by its intriguing archipelago that is ideal for hiking, both in summer and in winter. People who prefer active holiday will also be attracted by the landscape in the surroundings as the locality is convenient for hiking and cycling and for skiing in winter. Neither lovers of fishing nor golf-players will be disappointed. You can also visit the local football or ice-hockey clubs. There are good players even though they do not play the highest league.

Pite Havsbad (Havsbadet)

In Piteå, there is a touristic complex Pite Havsbad (Havsbadet) which is about 10 km southeast of the city’s centre and offers a beautiful swimming centre and charming beaches. It is one of the most popular Swedish holiday resorts. It is renowned for its long lasting sunshine, quite warm water and especially for the vast beaches with fine golden sand. There is also a nudist beach there. In the Pite Havsbad complex, you can swim in one of the outdoors swimming- pools with water slides or visit the indoors pools Tropikbadet with a number of water attractions, sauna, steam bath and slides. You can get there from Piteå by bus n. 1.There is also a good restaurant in the complex.

Historical monuments in Piteå

One of the most notable historical monuments of Piteå is the local town hall. It belongs among the most significant monuments in Sweden. It was built in 1830 and is a great example of the classicistic wooden architecture. In the premises of the town hall you will come across the Piteå museum dedicated to the history of the city and its surroundings. Another monument is the church Piteå kyrka, built in 1686. It is one of the oldest preserved religious buildings in Northland. Inside, there is a beautiful baroque altar featuring the Jesus Christ’s suffering. It was bought from one of the churches in Stockholm in 1700. By bus n. 1, you can also get to the not very distant parish village Öjebyn which is one of the oldest parish villages in Sweden. The rest of the city Piteå consists of rather unsightly streets full of concrete buildings, pedestrian zones with shops and humdrum small squares. The most elegant of them is the pedestrian zone Storgatan and Rådhustorget Square.

Touristic services in Piteå

Piteå offers a wide choice of accommodation, restaurants, fast-foods and bars. One of the most popular accommodation facilities is the Stadshotellet Hotel. Skoogs City Hotel is a cheaper and more frugal alternative. The young will surely appreciate the hostel in the premises of a former hospital. There is a camp in Pite Havsbad as well.
Piteå is an ideal place for gourmets, where you can taste many typical Swedish meals. The most sought-after local speciality is the so-called pitepalt, which consists of big potato dumplings filled with meat, are served with butter. You can try this meal in the already mentioned parish village Öjebyn in the restaurant Paltzerian. In July, you may savour this dish in Piteå in the Storgatan Street. It is served in several stands there. Another good restaurant in the city is the Chinese restaurant Pentryt, where they offer meals of about 60 SEK. On Friday evenings, this restaurant turns into a disco. You will also obtain tasteful meals in the restaurant Pigalle. In Blå Ängeln, they have the best pizza in the city. If you only intend to have a drink in Piteå, you should try the Cockney Pub as it offers a wide range of beer or the Karls Källa with beer for favourable prices. The “English” pub Olivers Inn is also very popular.

History of Piteå

The exact date of the city’s foundation is unknown. Piteå gained the city rights on May 12th 1621. In July 1666, the whole city burnt down, except for the church, but it was gradually rebuilt again. Piteå was in its heyday in the beginning of the 20th century. The growth of the city’s population is ascribed to the construction of the railway Älvsbyn-Piteå and the expansion of the port. Today, the city is known for its successful forestry and paper industry.
