In the Middle Ages, it was an important trade port and one of the Maritime Republics. However, the former prosperity of the city came to its end when the port began to silt up. Nature lovers should not miss the local botanic gardens Orto Botanico dell'Università di Pisa , which were created in 1544 and are thus the oldest university botanic gardens in the world.
