Pireus is one of the most significant cities in the region of Attica in Greece . Pireus is situated in the southern part of the country, about 8 km from the capital city Athens . It is the busiest port in Europe ant the third busiest port in the world. About 19 million passengers pass through the port every year.

About the city

The city Pireus itself has nearly 200,000 inhabitants and the biggest employer in the region is of course the local port. The harbor in Pireus went through a big modernization in 2004, when Greece hosted the Olympic Games and it was necessary to increase the capacity of the port. The port in Pireus serves for personal transport only, so you will not meet oil tankers or large trade ships there. These ships are rerouted to other Greek ports.

Glances into history

The history of the city Pireus goes back to the era of ancient Greece, when Pireus was chosen as the port for ships heading to the continuously growing Athens . The city had declined over time and it began to grow again in the 19th century when Athens became the capital city of modern Greece . Today, the city offers many cultural activities and hosts concerts of world-famous singers and music bands.

Monuments and museums

There is an interesting archaeological site in Pireus that offers findings from the ancient harbor. The most significant findings are the four bronze statues depicting Apollo, Artemis and Aphrodite in above-life size scale. The statues probably come from the 4th century BC. There are interesting museums in Pireus, such as the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus dedicated to ancient artifacts and the Hellenic Maritime Museum that presents the naval history of Greece .
