Category: Region, Local time: 08:35:07, Altitude: 577m

The Pieniny is a very attractive tourist area and a mountain range at the border between Slovakia and Poland . The Slovak part of the Pieniny, also called the Zamaguří, is located in the northern part of the Spiš region. The Polish Pieniny mountain range is located at the territory of Eastern Beskydy Mountains.

The Pieniny area is an ideal destination for active holiday, in particular for hiking. The most frequently visited places are the mountains called Tři korunky (Trzy korony) and Sokolica on the Polish side and the so-called Prielom Dunajca (the canyon formed by the Dunajec River) on the Slovak Side. The area offers a wide range of accommodation facilities. The main centre of the Pieniny is called Spišská Stará Ves . It is a good starting point for trips to the surroundings.

Prielom Dunajca (Dunajec Gorges)

The area called Prielom Dunajca is located between Červený Kláštor , where you can visit the museum , and Lesnica . It is the most valuable part of the Pieniny area. The locality includes deep canyons and meanders formed by the Dunajec River. The Prielom Dunajca is very attractive due to the possibility to go down the river on traditional wooden rafts while listening to the traditional local music produced by a local band. Another popular destination is the castle in Niedzica (it is located before the reservoir) .

Pieniny National Park

On the Polish side, the National Park was established in 1932. In 1955 the Pieniński Park Narodowy was enlarged to the area of 2231 hectares. The Slovak part of the Pieniny was declared the National Park in 1967. In 1997 the territory of the Pieniny National Park was extended to total 3750 hectares.

Mountains and caves

The Pieniny range comprises a mountainous massive whose dominant summits are located on the Polish side - Sokolica (747 m above sea) and Trzy korony, 982 m above sea) . The summits on the Slovak side are lower, for example, Holica (828 m above sea) . Certain parts of the locality called Haligovské skály include caverns but they are not accessible for the public. The best-known caves in this part of the Pieniny are: the Aksamitka cave, the Zbojnická cave, the Jezevčí (.e. Badger) Cave, the Kozí (i.e. Goat) Cave and the Medvědí díry (i.e. Bear Holes) .
