Palmerston North is an important junction of the North Island of New Zealand . It lies in the southern part of the island, about 67 km from the city of Wanganui . Palmerston North lies in a fertile plain, used for grazing from the 1960s. The heart of Palmerston North consists of The Square – a garden square with flower beds, shrubs, fountains and well-maintained lawns. An interesting building in Palmerston North is the New Zealand Rugby Museum, founded in 1968, depicting the history of rugby in New Zealand from the first match in 1870 until the present days. Other interesting sites are the Science Museum and the Manawatu Museum - the only regional museum in New Zealand , which combines scientific exhibits with cultural life. The hot air balloon that visitors can inflate using a blower is also very popular.
