Palma de Mallorca is the capital of the Mallorca island which belongs to Spain. It is situated on the southwestern coast of the island and it is the biggest city too. Palma de Mallorca has about 320,000 inhabitants. It was founded by the Romans in 123 B.C. and it was built on the ruins of Iron Age settlement. In this year the Romans invaded the Mallorca island to drive out pirates. They built Palmneria town – triumphal palm. In 902 Moors get the Mallorca island and they renamed the town to Medina Mayurka. In this period Palma de Mallorca was rich with many beautiful monuments, for example Almudaina palace is trace of this period. In 1229 the Mallorca island was conquered by the Christians and many buildings was destroyed by Christian king James I. In the place of former mosque was built beautiful cathedral Sa Seu by him. In the next years Palma de Mallorca suffered because of pirates which plundered the island and that is why the commerce was stopped. Between 1936 – 1939 were the capital and the whole island bombarded by the Fascists. After that Palma de Mallorca became popular tourist destination. In the Old town, called La Portella except Sa Seu cathedral and Almudaina palace there are interesting the large park – Parc de la Mar, Royal Gardens, Arab bath, Monti Sion church, Sant Francesc monastery, Santa Eulalia church, Can Berga palace, Solleric palace or March palace. Palma de Mallorca is the biggest port and a traffic node of the island too. Above the city there is Bellver castle from 13th century. The castle is still interesting view point of Palma de Mallorca. If you go from Parc de la Mar along the seaside, you can see the commercial port and the fishing port. There are fresh fish in Palma de Mallorca every day in the morning. Not far from here there is Club de la Mar – with luxury boats and yachts, and there is ferries dock too. The oldest part of the port of Palma de Mallorca is the Torre de Pelaires tower, which was built in the 15th century and which served as a quarantine equipment. In the city of Palma de Mallorca there are modern buildings too, for example Auditorium, which is modern concert hall or the Joan Miró museum, which was completed in 1993 in honour of the Joan Miró painter. Palma de Mallorca as a capital city of the Mallorca island has many accommodation facilities, restaurants, bars and a public transport. With a public transport you can get to the nearby beaches belonging to the capital city. On the east from the Palma de Mallorca there is the most visited beach in Can Pastilla beach resort.
