Then in 734 B.C. the Phoenicians built a settlement of Palermo in this locality. At that time, the town was a trading centre. The city of Palermo was seriously damaged during the Second World War. .

Tourist attractions

Palermo is attractive for tourists due to its pleasant climate, gastronomy and historic monuments. One of the dominating features of Palermo is the building of Palermo Cathedral that was built in 1185. The other interesting places in Palermo are: Church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti (from the 6th century) ; Church Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio (built in 1151) ; Church of San Cataldo (built in 1160) ; Church of San Giuseppe dei Teatini (beginning of the 17th century) ; Church of Santa Teresa alla Kalsa (built between 1686 and 1706) ; Chiesa del Gesu (1564) ; Church of St. Francis of Assisi ( 1255–1277) ; Palazzo dei Normanni, the most beautiful Italian Palace; Palazzo Abatellis (end of the 15th century, now the regional gallery; and Museo Archeologico Regionale - one of the most important archaeological museums in Italy . There are other cultural centres in Palermo, such as the Massimo Theatre which was re-open in 1974 or the Politeama Theatre which was built between 1867 and 1874.

The airports are accessible by train (from the railway station Palermo Centrale, Palermo Notarbartolo and Palermo Francia. To move around the city, you can use the Metropolitana di Palermo metro or you can take a taxi.
