Paklenica National Park is a protected area in Croatia
, located in the southern part of the Velebit mountain range, near the town Zadar
. Paklenica National Park is a karst canyon of a river. In the area of the park you can find a series of different karst phenomena, e.g. rocks, rock formations and extensive forests. These forests are the biggest on the shores of the river. Paklenica National Park was founded in 1949. It covers an area of 102 km2
. The most interesting places of the park are the two canyons: the Small and the Great Paklenica separated from each other by a 500 m high plateau. The Small Paklenica is a canyon without water. The highest Croatian rock - the Anića Kuk is 712 metres high, and forms a part of the Great Paklenica. Before entering the canyon, there is a complex of tunnels built as a hiding place for Josip Tito at the turn of the 1940s and 50s. In the northern part of the canyon, there is the largest stalactite cave of Paklenica National Park - the Manita Peć. The cave is 175 metres long, and it consists of two chambers. Visitors can enter the cave only with a guide. Paklenica National Park, and mainly its rock formations, are a popular and often visited site for rock climbers.
