This site had already been inhabited in the Bronze age but, obviously, the remains of the castle date back only to the 13th century. In the ancient times, there was an important trade route from Bohemia to Lusatia right here. The Oybin Rock Castle experienced the biggest boom during the reign of Charles IV, who had the walls of the castle developed, and added new constructions, including and the Gothic church. The castle was struck by the lightning in 1577 and the building completely burned down. Since then, the castle dilapidated and it was nearly forgotten.
The Oybin Rock Castle was rediscovered in the Romantic period. Its ruins attracted the attention of tourists. At preesent, the rescue work is in progress.
You can get to the village Oybin from Zittau on a unique narrow-gauge railway.
