Oviedo is a city in Spain . It is located in the northern part of the country, in the valley of rivers Nalón and Nora on the foothill of Monte Naranco Mountain (634 m above sea level) , approximately 30 km from Gijón . It is the capital of the autonomous community of Asturias. It has about 230 000 inhabitants in these days. Oviedo attracts tourists especially by its cultural monuments and traditions. The city of Oviedo is said to be founded in 761.

Touristic highlights

The dominating landmark of the city Oviedo is the late Gothic Cathedral of San Salvador from the 13th– 16th century with the pre-Roman chapel of Cámara Santa from the 9th century. It was added on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1985, along with the nearby church San Julián de los Prados, fountain Foncalada and two churches San Miguel de Lillo and Santa María del Naranco. These religious buildings significantly affected the development of religious architecture all over the Iberian Peninsula. Another important building is the Monastery of St. Vincent, whose premises are now used by the Archaeological Museum of Asturias and the Faculty of Psychology of the prestigious University of Oviedo that was founded in 1608.

The most important feast is the Day of St. Matthew on September 21st when many concerts, accompanied by a parade and beautiful fireworks, take place.
