Oulanka National Park was founded in 1956. It occupies an area of 270 km2 thus it is one of the largest parks in the country. Oulanka National Park is characterized by beautiful landscape with rapid streams, ravines and lakes with sand banks. There are two beautiful waterfalls in the park. The forests comprise mostly pine and spruce. Along the main tourist trails you will come across cabins and camping sites suitable for overnight stay. Oulanka National Park is an amazing locality for outdoor people as there is a lot of wildlife. You can come across e.g. bear, lynx, etc.
There is a variety of marked trails throughout the Oulanka National Park. Perhaps the most popular is the Bear Ring (Karhunkierros) , one of the oldest and best hiking trails in Finland . It is 80 km long. There are many other popular trails, eg. the 5 km long educational trail called Hiidenlampi. Visitors are allowed picking berries and mushrooms (no permission is required) . Hunting and fishing is prohibited without permission.
