The Odra River has formed a historical border between Moravia and Silesia. Archaeological findings show that the territory of Ostrava was first settled by mammoth hunters, who used to live on the top of Landek, the hill above the confluence of the Odra and Ostravice. The hunters were definitely the very first people in the world who were able to set up fire with black coal (as the coal appears just on the ground) . The most valuable archaeological finding from that time is a tiny statuette -a female torso of hematite (called "Landecká Venuše" i.e. Venus of Landek) . The main historical part of the city is called the Moravian Ostrava, first mentioned in 1267. In 1763, large deposits of black coal were discovered in the valley of Burňa at Silesian Ostrava, and this year is considered an important milestone for the future development. There were 20 mines throughout the territory of today´s Ostrava in 1900. However, coal is not excavated in the city of Ostrava anymore. At present, the oldest part of the Moravian Ostrava is an urban preserve with many monuments. At the square you can admire the Old Renaissance Town Hall (16th century) , now the Ostrava Museum. The oldest architectural monument in the city of Ostrava is St. Wenceslas´ Church from the first half of the 13th century with a presbytery from the 14th century. The triple-aisle is known for its ribbed vault. Saviour´s Cathedral (1883-89) is the second largest in Moravia, after the Basilica at Velehrad. The Cathedral dominates the city with its two 67-metre-tall towers. Another significant monument of Ostrava is the monumental New Town Hall with a glassy lookout tower (85m) , whose gallery is open to tourists. You will come across various technical monuments at various parts of the city that document coal mining. Ostrava, previously the city full of smog, has changed and developed during the last decades. At present, it is being converted into a green city with valuable, especially technical monuments. Ostrava is known for a lot of theatres, schools, sports facilities, museums, parks, etc. There is a very popular zoological garden ZOO , Dinopark . Poruba, a part of the Ostrava township, is known for the observatory and planetarium. During the recent years Ostrava has become very attractive for young people, who usually meet at Stodolní Street, perhaps the best-known entertainment street in the Czech Republic (bars, taverns, pubs, clubs and discos) . At present, the population of Ostrava is approximately 315 thousand..
