Oslo is the capital city of Norway . It lies at the mouth of the fjord of the same name. It is this specific location that makes it different from other capital cities.
Basic facts about Oslo
The first records of the city come from around 1048, when King Harald III Hardrada was in power. The population of Oslo and the adjoining parts counts about 800,000 inhabitants. It is the seat of the king, the parliament and all major state and religious institutions. It lies on an uneven surface and the city is dominated by a ski jump and the television tower Tryvann. It is a major economic and cultural center of the state. On the turn of the 13th and 14th century, King Haakon V had a castle and the fort Akershus built there. In 1627, the city was completely burnt down and was rebuilt again. In 1811, a university was established there.
Monuments
The most significant cultural monument is the royal palace from the first half of the 18th century. It is the residence of the Norwegian royal family. The Frogner Park that was built during 20 years, was created by the sculptor Gustav Vigeland and includes 192 granite and bronze sculptures symbolizing the circle of life.
In the city, you can visit the National Theater, the university or the royal palace with a park. There are historical museums, the National Gallery and many other museums, such as the Norwegian Resistance Museum dedicated to the fight against the fascist occupants. In the museum of Viking ships, you can see ships and archaeological findings found on the bank of the fjord. Those who are interested in polar explorations will be thrilled by the Fram Museum, named after the wooden vessel, on which Fridtjof Nansen sailed when exploring the polar areas. From the parliament building, there is a pedestrian zone with various shops, restaurants and banks.
The Nobel Prize
Oslo is inseparably linked with the prize-giving of the Nobel Prize. The ceremony annually takes place at the town hall on 10 December. The author of the gold medal is the already mentioned sculptor Gustav Vigeland.
