Osaka is the third largest city in Japan . The city lies on the island of Honshu, in the places where the river Jodó flows into the Osaka Bay. It is situated approximately 500 km from Tokyo . Osaka is also one of the 47 prefectures of Japan established in 1868. Until the 15th century, Osaka was called Naniwa, and it was an important commercial centre. Today, it is the most important commercial center of the western part of Japan.

The City

In the past, Osaka was one of the seven Japanese harbours opened to international trade. These days, Osaka is one of the largest ports, and at the same time it is an important industrial centre. Osaka is now a nice city with many high-rise buildings. Most buildings in the city come from the second half of the 20th century, but you can find here much older buildings, as well. The city is divided into the historical southern part, and the modern, commercial northern part. During the Second World War, Osaka was bombed heavily, yet there are still some well-preserved buildings.

Osaka Castle

The most important historical building is the Osaka Castle. It was built in 1586, originally as the first major Buddhist temple in Japan . In 1615, the building suffered serious damages. Even though it was later reconstructed, very little survived to the 20th century. In 1931 a replica of the castle was built. The castle is a home of a historical museum.

Ancient and Modern Buildings

The temple Shitennō-ji and the shrine Sumiyoshi Taisha are also important remains from the past. The oldest preserved part of the temple is the entrance gate built in 1294. The shrine was founded in the 3rd century, but the current buildings are only the copies of the original buildings. The shrine is surrounded by a park with an interesting semi-circular arched bridge.

The City of Museums and Parks

In the city of Osaka, we can find many museums. The most visited are the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, the Osaka Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of Art, the Osaka Ethnography Museum and the Money Museum, showing a historical mint. Another popular place in Osaka is the Open-Air Museum of Old Japanese Farm Houses. The buildings were moved here from various parts of Japan. In the city of Osaka, we can also find interesting modern attractions, e.g. the Osaka Maritime Museum and the Universal Studios Japan theme park. There are many beautiful parks and gardens in Osaka, and the most interesting local park is called Osaka Jo Koen.
