The name of the mountain range is derived from the Orlice River. The highest summit of the Orlicke Mountains is Velká Deštná (1115 m) . A large part of the Orlicke Mountains is protected. The protected landscape area Orlicke Mountains occupies some 204 km2. In addition, there are numerous localities protected as nature reserves, national nature reserves or nature monuments.
On the top of Velká Deštná (1115 m) , there is a not very high wooden lookout tower . It offers wonderful views of the surrounding landscape. If the weather is good, you can identify the summits of the Krkonoše , Jeseníky and also Gory Stolowe in Poland. Not far from there, there is Malá Deštná (1090 m) , the second highest mountain in Orlicke Mountains. There are also other lookout towers and lookout points in the Orlicke Mountains that offer views of the most beautiful parts of the mountain range. The third highest top, 1 084 metres, is named Vrchmezí. It is situated just at the Czech- Polish border. Tourists are usually impressed by the steep slopes of this mountain. In the past, there was a tourist chalet which burnt out in 1946.
On the other hand, you can come across a restaurant on the top of Šerlich - it is called Masarykova chata. It ranks among the most favourite tourist destinations in the region of the Orlicke Mountains. Šerlich is easy to access and it is a good starting point for trips. Not far from it you can come across a former mill (now used as a hotel) .
The Orlicke Mountains are characterized by a special defence system which had been built from 1936 because of the threat of Nazi invasion. The system comprises small bunkers, called in Czech "řopíky", cannon forts and other objects. After the Munich Agreement in 1938, the defence system lost its importance. At present, a lot of its components are used as museums.
Orlicke Mountains offer a great many beautiful little churches and picturesque villages. Anyway, the biggest attraction is the recreational opportunities. Besides tourism and cycling, the region is attractive for skiing as well. Excellent conditions for cross-country skiing can be found in the whole territory of the mountains and you can use kilometres of well-maintained trails with good background facilities. Popular and frequently visited downhill skiing resorts are, among others, e.g. Ski resort Deštné v Orlických horách , Skicentre Říčky or Ski resort Buková hora Čenkovice .
There are three bigger towns in the Orlicke Mountains, Rychnov nad Kněžnou , Ústí nad Orlicí and Lanškroun . They offer a great variety of accommodation facilities, tourist services and social and cultural activities. Smaller towns with tourist infrastructure are, for example, Vamberk or Rokytnice v Orlických Horách . In addition, you can find a lot of private accommodation facilities and board houses in the villages throughout the mountain range.
