The city of Omis is a well-sought Croatian tourist resort. It is situated near the Adriatic motorway at the mouth of the river Cetina by the Adriatic sea. Omis is famous for its long beach that has been awarded a Blue flag for its quality. Omis is also attractive as a gateway for trips to the canyon of the river Cetina. Recently there are about 6500 inhabitants living in Omis. The city’s industrial production is slowly decreasing in order to increase healthy environment and suitable conditions for development of tourism. You can find a lot of types of accommodation in Omis including the campsites. The whole city is situated in a rocky landscape and the main dominant of the city are the ruins of the old fortress Mirabela from the 13th century. The city of Omis was established on the place of former Roman settlement. Later this place was occupied by feared pirates who kept troubling the shipping and trade for a long time. After an unsuccessful attempt of Venetians to capture Omis, the owners of the ships started to pay a ransom to the pirates. Not even later during the Turkish expansion to the Balkan it was not successful to take over the city. The long lasting history of the city Omis left a big amount of valuable historical monuments. The oldest of all is a small church of St. Peter (Petrova crkva) on the right bank of the river Cetina, which comes from the period about 1000 B.C. Furthermore, there are the already mentioned Mirabela fortress´ remnants including the cubic tower on the rocks and also the ruins of the Starigrad fortress. More spiritual and architectural monuments are located in the historical part of the town of Omis. It is also interesting to see an underwater defensive wall which was to protect the port from foreign ships. There are a lot of sport facilities in the resort Omis and they vary from water sports, paragliding through to traditional sports such as soccer, volleyball and tennis. In the destination Omis there can also be found a lot of bike trails as well as well-equipped sports rentals If you want to enjoy your time, you can certainly find enough opportunities such as discos, bars, dancing terraces, restaurants and during the season there are a lot of traditional festivals. Omis can also be a good place for a number of interesting excursions, or for visiting other resorts located in the area.
