Edinburgh is the capital city of Scotland since the 15th century. It consists of two parts, The Old Town with a medieval fortress and The New Town built in neo-classic style. There are interesting buildings in both parts of the city. The first record of Edinburgh comes from the Roman times. King Malcom III chose Edinburgh for his residence and built a fortress there. The castle located on the top of a volcanic hill represents the most important building of the city. Great place of interest is the 65m long and 35m wide cathedral. Other notable places include royal palace, monastery, library, old townhall etc. In 1995, The Old and New Town of Edinburgh was added to the UNESCO list.
