Odessa is the fourth largest city in the Ukraine . It is situated in the southern part of the country, on the coast of the Black Sea.

Historical background of the city

There were Greek settlements in the area of the today's city in antiquity. They were later annexed to the strong states that were created in the area, such as Kievan Rus or Golden Horde. The city Odessa itself was founded in 1794 during the reign of the Tsarina Catherina II the Great. She decided to take advantage of the strategic location of the city, which was ideal for improving relations with Europe . On the turn of the 18th and 19th century, the port began to develop rapidly.

Birthplace of famous personalities

Odessa has been a popular tourist destination since the 19th century. It has the reputation of a cosmopolitan city. Many important Russian personalities were born there, such as the poetess Anna Akhmatova, Isaak Baabel or Dmitri Mendeleev.

The most significant monuments in the city include the Potemkin Stairs, the Odessa catacombs and the Opera and the Ballet Theater, which was built in the 19th century and is considered one of the most beautiful operas in Europe . The most popular museums are the Museum of Partisan Glory and the Odessa Archaeological Museum, which is situated in a beautiful neo-classical building. Odessa also attracts tourists to its many therapeutic centers. The most popular park in Odessa is the city park, where there is a unique fountain that sprays perfume every hour.
